approach

The importance of effectively allocating and managing internal resources, especially people, has never been so crucial in these challenging economic times. And, of course, growing profitable sales and mutually beneficial external business partnerships.

Whatever the challenge, the Stephen C. Business Coaching  (SCBC) client-centred approach has three main general characteristics.

  1. identifying and understanding the specific needs, goals and challenges of the individual or business
  2. strategy design and action planning taking the future into account
  3. support with implementation of practical, cost-effective solutions

Whilst recognising the distinction between “hard” and “soft” skills.

Yes, “hard” skills are important, for example, proven project management techniques like Prince2, Agile or simply developing and implementing simple action plans.

However softer skills are becoming increasingly important.

With greater emphasis on emotional intelligence so that individuals can first better understand themselves, thereby enabling development of lasting empathy with important others. And gaining a deeper understanding of staff psychology and motivation.

Handy therefore to be able to draw on refined teaching, assessing, coaching and mentoring skills. Effective positive interventions using the following techniques where appropriate:

  • the Enneagram
  • Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)
  • Yoga (RTS 200 hour instructor)

And not, of course, forgetting good communication. Using effective English in both spoken and written forms.

With television and business presentation skills, the former a legacy of experience of international television news and television production/facilities, the latter refined through numerous presentations to professional audiences both large and small.

All adding up to positive change for your business.

approach

Whatever the challenge, Stephen’s approach has 3 main characteristics.

  1. understanding the specific needs and goals of the individual or business
  2. strategy design, taking the future into account
  3. support with implementation of practical, cost-effective solutions

Continuous professional development has always been a priority for Stephen, to help add further value to clients. Stephen has personally funded formal training in teaching, assessing, coaching and mentoring skills.

An effective communicator Stephen also trained as a TV Presenter, a legacy of his days working in international television news and television production/facilities.

Natural empathy building skills have been supplemented with a deeper understanding of human motivation and psychology, the “soft” skills in business that are rapidly growing in importance.

With internal and external business relationships and effective use of people being so crucial these days, further significant personal investment in accreditations for the Enneagram, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), and Yoga (RTS 200 hour instructor) has added potential new solutions for clients in this important area.

To provide greater focus and productivity, more effective interactions and better teamwork. Which means a greater sense of general well-being, more motivation, higher customer satisfaction and an improved bottom line.

learn business English

Stephen, MBA, is a CertTESOL qualified English teacher (Trinity College, University of London), plus TEFL-in-Spain certification in Business English

Business-focused English classes, online

Why do you want to learn English?

This is a key question for you, and for me.

I choose to work only with motivated, busy people.

People who seek to achieve business or career success through a stronger capability in English.

This means that you must have a specific objective in mind from your classes to get the best from your precious investment of time and money.

And you must also be committed to spend time on home study and practice. It’s like an iceberg, with formal classes being just the tip of it!

One hour of class time a week with me requires a commitment by you to 4 hours of home study per week (that’s a little more than half an hour per day).

Otherwise there’s no point in having English classes.

As a business owner or Director your powerful motivations may be:

  • developing new English-speaking markets……
  • ……with implications for improving English skills (for you and your employees), such as……
  • ……specific functional skills, like giving effective presentations in English……
  • ……or being more precise in your communication at business meetings or on the telephone……
  • ……or perhaps you need help with English “small talk”, so crucial for making contacts and building effective rapport (with customers, at business conferences etc.)

Some of the above may also apply if you’re an ambitious professional. Maybe also looking to achieve an internationally recognised B2 level (or C1, C2) English qualification, for example, Cambridge English examinations.

The only limit is your ambition.

How does it work?

A good teacher starts by helping to identify the goals and then breaking them down into sub-goals. This feeds into design of a relevant programme of learning, involving weekly online English classes, agreed between student and teacher. Including periodic progress reviews.

I use this best practice with all my students.

How much does it cost?

Basic classes are charged in advance at:

€20 per hour

€25 for 90 minutes

Additional requirements incur extra charges subject to an agreed quotation.

Why choose me?

I am an experienced business English teacher and professional coach to business executives. My clearly spoken BBC English-style is easy to understand.

A list of significant and relevant qualifications includes:

  • Cert TESOL English teaching (Trinity College, University of London)
  • Business English (TEFL-in-Spain certification)
  • MBA (Masters in Business Administration)
  • Economics (first degree)
  • Marketing (post-graduate Diploma)

I understand the challenges and commitment involved in learning another language.

Attending Spanish classes and regularly using home study along with daily Spanish conversational practice has enabled me to make steady improvement. A familiarity with German and French has also broadened my understanding of different language structures.

Trained in English phonetics, I am strict on correct pronunciation, whilst also giving students the tools to practice better pronunciation on their own.

During my long career working for multi-national PLC corporations (3M and Serco), and as a Director and coach to small businesses, I have used English functionally in all the main business contexts.

I have also acted in a number of amateur dramatic theatre productions, and I even wrote and performed in my own original play with a Christmas theme.

My background working within the UK broadcast television industry included training as a television presenter, shooting both in studio and outside on location.

And last, but not least, I am a qualified Yoga teacher.

To find out how I can help you improve your English online, email stephen@stephenc.co.uk

This is an example page. It’s different from a blog post because it will stay in one place and will show up in your site navigation (in most themes). Most people start with an About page that introduces them to potential site visitors. It might say something like this:

Hi there! I’m a bike messenger by day, aspiring actor by night, and this is my website. I live in Los Angeles, have a great dog named Jack, and I like piña coladas. (And gettin’ caught in the rain.)

…or something like this:

The XYZ Doohickey Company was founded in 1971, and has been providing quality doohickeys to the public ever since. Located in Gotham City, XYZ employs over 2,000 people and does all kinds of awesome things for the Gotham community.

Take the Enneagram RHETI Sampler Test

The Enneagram (literal Greek meaning, a drawing with nine points) provides a powerful system for self-awareness and self-discovery that benefits you as an individual, in your important relationships, and in your business.

The Oxford English dictionary defines the Enneagram as:

“A nine-sided figure used in a particular system of analysis to represent the spectrum of possible personality types”.

Depicted as a circle with nine points, the origin of the Enneagram symbol has been traced back to ancient Egyptian times.

However it’s only in the last 100 years or so that its influence has really started to re-emerge in society thanks to the pioneering work of a number of key individuals.

Most recently, new depths to the Enneagram were discovered through research by Don Riso and Russ Hudson of The Enneagram Institute.

You can be sure that you are one of the nine personality Types. This means that you relate to the world, and the people around you, in a particular way.

which Enneagram Type are you?

Type One: The Reformer

Type Two: The Helper

Type Three: The Achiever

Type Four: The Individualist

Type Five: The Investigator

Type Six: The Loyalist

Type Seven: The Enthusiast

Type Eight: The Challenger

Type Nine: The Peacemaker

It’s only you that can know your Enneagram Type for sure.

When you click on the RHETI sampler questionnaire link (either below or at the top of the page), be sure first to read carefully the instructions for answering the multiple choice questions.

The test takes around 10 minutes to complete. Click on the button at the end and your results will be presented. Make a note of your scores for each Enneagram Type.

It’s most likely that your Enneagram Type will be one of the 3 highest scores.

What are the implications for you, the important people around you, and for your business?

If you would like to book an initial FREE 10 minute interpretation of your Enneagram Type results, ring +34 617 887 477 or +44 (0)7826 335881 or email stephen@stephenc.co.uk

resources

how do you or your company measure up?

Here are some tried-and-tested approaches for effective change:

A. Focus on the issues that matter most

The challenge:

  1. to find and retain a sufficient number of satisfied, loyal customers to meet business goals
  2. by offering products and services they want now
  3. at the same time anticipating future needs, to stay ahead of the competition.

This is an ongoing process of discovery. Continue to ask the key questions:

  • why?
  • what?
  • when?
  • who?
  • where?
  • which?
  • how?
  • how many/much/often/long?

“Why customers buy?” is a key question:

  1. repeat the “why?” question at least 5 times
  2. each answer digs deeper and deeper to reveal customers’ real purchase motivations
  3. this is crucial in refining your offer and key promotional messages
  4. so you can satisfy the key questions – “what they want, and how, when, and where they want it?”.
  5. at a price giving a healthy profit

Never forgetting the importance of customer service excellence:

  • all staff inevitably impact on customer service, whether directly or indirectly
  • everyone in the company has eyes and ears to contribute to the continual learning process
  • customers expect excellent service in all supplier contact or they will surely go elsewhere
  • have your staff really bought into this imperative?
  • how can selective investment in IT/digital communication investment tools help them do their job better?
  • a healthy culture, where two-way communication is positively encouraged, makes it much easier for staff to embrace change

B. Simple Business Planning

Is your plan aimed at market leadership, steady growth, or mere survival in challenging times?

It’s not surprising that business planning has a bad name particularly with small businesses owners. Textbooks typically make it far too complicated and time-consuming. Here’s a simple staged approach:

It’s important to focus on a few key elements:

  • clear goals with direction set by you
  • business model up-to-date and still relevant
  • key strategy measures for customers, finance, people, IT/digital, processes
  • financial forecasts including break even, profit and loss, cash flow
  • action plans to implement, clearly assigning responsibilities and timescales
  • performance management monitoring key indicators for early corrective action

Not forgetting effective, clear communication. Using the most appropriate communication methods. The clearer and more simple the approach, the more likely key messages will be remembered e.g. using Powerpoint slides to summarise information.

Consider investments in digital communications and IT in a strategic context. As a key supporting pillar of the business that helps drive positive customer satisfaction and cost efficiencies.

The right combination of hardware, software applications and connectivity that takes into account emerging needs e.g. from the explosion of mobile device usage.

C. The Human Touch

Genuine trust and empathy are precious commodities in life and business. In business, people matter more than ever before. Forget this at your peril!

Here’s a simple 10 point plan:

  1. check how personal goals influence business goals – can you be sure that these are in alignment?
  2. what about your fellow owners/directors – is there alignment there too?
  3. are there underlying tensions with your Owners/Directors – that are holding the business back?
  4. start by become more self-aware – to understand how your behaviour impacts on others
  5. heightened awareness at the top – makes it’s much easier and acceptable to broaden the approach to others
  6. investigate the interplay of relationships in the business – enhance the positive, minimise the detrimental
  7. accept people with differing views to your own – challenge prevailing wisdom for new insights and perspectives
  8. create a “blame-free culture” – that welcomes change and continual improvement
  9. new insights – to identify new opportunities and new sources of competitive advantage
  10. identify and implement personal development needs – to improve business capability

The Enneagram personality profiling can help with this process. Using the Enneagram, the authentic, powerful personality-based system actively practiced by business and personal coaches in over 20 countries worldwide, to better understand and then build effective relationships. It’s an authentic, powerful, proven method for understanding relationship dynamics in both business and personal contexts.

Or click on Take the Enneagram Test  for a FREE ten minute personality profiling, multiple-choice questionnaire:

  • Which Enneagram personality Type are you? – Reformer, Helper, Achiever, Individualist, Investigator, Loyalist, Enthusiast, Challenger, Peacemaker?
  • How does this affect your relationship with others?
  • How will a heightened awareness of yourself and others benefit the business?

about

MBA      Cert TESOL      BA Hons (Econ)      DipM (CIM)

An independent business coach and language teacher, with an MBA (postgraduate Masters in Business), experienced in working with companies of all sizes, from small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), to some of the world’s largest corporations (3M, Reuters, Serco).

Whether delivering coaching on premise or online (e.g. Skype), Stephen’s particular passion is to help motivated businesses and English language students achieve their full potential (see “approach” page for more details).

By offering business and language coaching delivered to the standards expected of an MBA and Cert TESOL (Trinity College, London University) qualified coach.

Communicating in clear English (BBC-style) that is easily understood by students. Specialising in correct English pronunciation (phonetics featured strongly in the CertTESOL professional English teaching qualification).

Good coaches enjoy witnessing the positive change in clients that they helped initiate. Whether a business owner or Director, an executive or team, or an individual learning English for personal reasons.

First hand SME experience as a former Director and shareholder of a very successful small television outside broadcast company, shooting productions for UK broadcasters including the BBC. Drawing on earlier management experience with Visnews, the international television news agency owned by Reuters, the BBC, and the US broadcaster NBC.

Trained and experienced in coaching techniques:

  • as a personal Business Adviser/Coach to over 250 individual business owners on one of the largest UK Business Link government contracts supporting SMEs
  • leading to a Senior Executive project role designing and implementing a comprehensive start-up workshop programme with a multi-million pound (£) budget
  • that ran over 4 years comprising 6,000 workshops with over 25,000 attendees
  • reporting 95% positive customer satisfaction, independently measured
  • to successfully meet the challenge of finding practical cost-effective measures in support of new business start-ups

Involvement across the whole business lifecycle spectrum was completed by founding a privately developed online website specifically designed to provide tools to help business owners wanting to sell the business.

As an Economics graduate, there’s the big picture perspective too.

Encouraging successful SMEs and new business start-ups must be at the heart of any government’s economic development agenda.

Representing the life-blood and future of any growing economy. Enabling people either thinking of starting a business, or in the process of doing so, to gain access to quality cost-effective support.

Stephen was recruited to the national Business Link service development group charged with introducing a standardised “Starting a Business” workshop programme in England. The end product was heavily influenced by the highly regarded South East workshop previously developed by Stephen.

A growing reputation as a start-up specialist then led to:

  • developing content for an interactive, online, self-help start-up service for www.gov.uk, the UK government’s new portal (a strategic IT/digital investment for further cost-effectiveness of service delivery)
  • UK contributor to the “Enspire” EU funded project to encourage wider entrepreneurship in Europe learning from best practice across the EU
  • particular interest was expressed by European colleagues in the Social Enterprise workshops developed as part of the South East business start-up programme.

coaching

coaching for personal and business success, face-to-face or online

  • What does personal and business success mean for you as a small business owner?
  • What’s the time frame for these goals? (1 year, 3-5 years, 10 years, your lifetime?)
  • Are you seeking business growth, consolidation or exit?
  • How does this contribute to life’s overall satisfaction?
  • How can important business and personal relationships be improved?

Personal and business goals are linked, which can make these questions tricky to answer. The effect of your decisions on others can be like ripples in a pond. On business partners, employees, family or an array of other affected parties.

It can feel like a considerable weight of responsibility, even a burden. How does this affect your leadership in practice?

Business Coaching is first about listening to your needs and concerns, then helping you to identify the underlying  issues and develop possible solutions. Drawing on input from the team, customers, suppliers and key partners as appropriate.

Effective change action inevitably needs the buy-in and involvement of all participants.

In a change process important aspects to consider are:

  • first understanding others and then helping to initiate positive changes in their behaviour
  • heightening your own self-awareness leading to more productive, empathetic relationships with less conflict
  • enabling more mindful two-way communication with fellow Directors, staff, teams and customers
  • making better decisions that take into account the broader consequence of actions
  • becoming a more effective leader who can motivate others

Change can also be supported with selective IT investments and faster digital communications. These may lead to greater efficiencies or enable development of innovative new services for customers, or both.

For a quotation to achieve better results, with people in mind, call +34 617 887 477 or +44 (0)7826 335881, or email stephen@stephenc.co.uk

It’s a confidential process conducted with integrity, using tried-and-tested business methods, for example the Enneagram, the powerful personality-based system actively practiced by business and personal coaches in over 20 countries worldwide.

Take the Enneagram Test  for a FREE ten minute personality profiling, multiple-choice questionnaire:
